Job Description

The Software Engineer Lead role allows you to participate in a greenfield development effort to replace legacy systems. A somewhat rare occurrence in modern software development. Collaborate with designers, analysts, and testers to deliver high-performing high-quality software products in an agile setting. Day-to-day work involves implementing user stories requiring medium to complex Java solutions on a large-scale Platform as a Service (PaaS) technology.

The role also has a strong leadership component and expects you to guide less-experienced developers on implementations. You are expected to promote a healthy team culture by encouraging learning and challenging ideas, especially through code reviews and design discussions. Ensure high quality code through various forms of testing including unit & component testing. Be a thought leader in helping to establish and refine coding best practices. Take ownership of continuous integration & delivery pipelines to get code to production quickly. You will also support the running of the product in production. You will develop a working knowledge of the complex solutions required to deliver innovative products at the nation’s largest publicly held insurer for personal lines.

  • Implements medium to high complexity stories and help others on lower complexity stories
  • Collaborates with other engineers, testers, and business experts to foster a high performing inclusive culture
  • Leads the design of many software components
  • Actively engages in code reviews to yield the highest quality code possible
  • Uses experience to challenge approaches but also makes reasonable compromises to achieve delivery objectives
  • Uses analytical skills to diagnose support issues that may not be well understood initially
  • Participates in all agile ceremonies with an iterative mindset including retrospectives to gather feedback and derive actionable items to improve the team and the product
  • Participates in executing the strategy, keeping the customer needs and wants in mind
  • Supports an environment of continuous learning through helping others and sharing expertise
  • Make technical presentations to the team

Job Qualifications

  • 4+ years of developing and implementing systems at scale preferably in Java
  • Ability to distill and present technical information to stakeholders with the appropriate level of detail.
  • Strong Java development skills preferably with experience in Spring
  • Working knowledge of Gradle
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines in Jenkins
  • Strong understanding of design patterns, object-oriented principles, and a desire to continuously improve code
  • Solid understanding of distributed systems, REST principles, databases, and security best practices
  • Solid understanding of software testing techniques at all levels
  • Solid understanding of data modeling and familiarity with XML and JSON schema standards
  • Basic understanding of performance analysis and tuning
  • Ability to analyze new code quickly and offer constructive feedback
  • Familiarity with Platform as a Service (PaaS) and container-based technologies a plus
  • Experience with Apache Kafka a plus
  • Knowledge of Apache Avro a plus
  • A college degree or equivalent experience in Computer Science or similar field, including a solid understanding of Computer Science fundamentals
